Present a Custom Membership Expired Message to Members
Wishlist Member at its core is missing a crucial feature that allows you to display custom messages to members whose membership has just expired using shortcodes and mergecodes.
Why Do I Need a Custom Membership Expired Message?
Imagine that you’ve setup your membership level to last only 1 month, after which you’d like to encourage your expired members to repurchase and extend their membership. Out of the box, Wishlist Member shortcodes and mergecodes can only display a message to users if they are either Active or Not Active, but not whether a member was previously enrolled in a membership and is now expired.
While Wishlist Member supports sending members to a designated Expired Membership page of your choosing when their membership expires, guess what happens if they’re apart of multiple memberships and only one of those levels has expired? They will not be redirected to the designated Expired page, because they have another membership level that is still active.
What Does Wishlist Member Expired Membership Check Do?
We created the Wishlist Member Expired Membership Check plugin to solve a particular problem that we faced running a more complex membership website in which we upsell premium membership levels to our current members who want to take their membership to the next level.
If you don’t want to have a separate page to inform expired members that their membership is expired, but would rather have separate messages on the same page presented to members with different membership level statuses, this plugin is for you!
Let’s say you have a basic membership level that provides the core of your basic content to your members but you want to offer unique premium content to those members who are willing to upgrade their accounts. By signing up for your premium membership level, they’ll keep access to their basic level but get exclusive extra special content in their premium membership. Let’s also say that while your basic membership level never expires, your premium membership level only lasts for 3 months at a time. Currently, with Wishlist Member out of the box, when your users’ 3 months of premium membership expires and they try to access their premium content, what happens? Probably just a message letting them know that they need to upgrade to gain access to the premium membership again as if they never upgraded in the first place.
Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to provide these expired members a custom Expired Message that lets them know that their membership is expired, and perhaps even that they can restart their membership at a discounted amount from what they paid the first time? After all, sales messaging to expired customers should be different than what’s being presented to customers who have not yet upgraded to the premium content. Using Wishlist Member Expired Membership Check, you can do just that: providing separate messages to members who have not yet upgraded to the premium membership, while providing a separate message to members whose premium membership has expired.
How Does the Plugin Work?
Expired Members of a Specific Level Only
With Wishlist Member Expired Membership Check, you can use the following mergecode (a variation of a WordPress shortcode) to display a message ONLY to members who’s membership for a specific level has expired:
[wlm_check_member_level_status level=’Bronze’ status=’Expired’ ]
Your unique message to Expired Members of the Bronze level.
Active Members of a Specific Level Only
The plugin not only works to present messages to Expired members, it also works to send unique messages to members who’s membership for a specific level is Active. Use the following mergecode (a variation of a WordPress shortcode) to display a message ONLY to members who’s membership for a specific level is currently active:
[wlm_check_member_level_status level=’Silver’ status=’Active’ ]
Your unique message to Expired Members of the Silver level.
Display a Unique Message to Members Who Have Never Ever Enrolled in a Specified Level
Finally, to make sure that you display a unique message to members who you can be sure have never in the past upgraded to your premium level, you can use the “Never Enrolled” argument in your mergecode to send them a unique message. This is important if you want to set a different price for your premium membership level for expired members vs. never enrolled members.
To display a message ONLY to members who’ve never enrolled in your premium membership, use the following:
[wlm_check_member_level_status level=’Gold’ status=’Not Enrolled’ ]
Your unique message to Expired Members of the Gold level.
